Cutting Energy Costs During the Heat of Summer

The warm weather has finally come to Tuscarawas County, and while most people are enjoying the summer months, the cost of energy bills can be a concern in extreme weather. Here are a few tips to help keep you carefree when it comes to energy costs.

Sometimes the circulating air is enough to keep you cool without turning on the AC, helping you resist the temptation to turn it on at all. Switch the fan blades to circulate counterclockwise in the summer, while they turn clockwise in the winter to push the rising heat back down into the room and continue the energy saving costs into the cold months.

Pay attention to insulation. Proper insulation is important for keeping cool air in while not allowing hot air to creep in from outside. Be sure your attic is well-insulated and your house well-sealed to keep your home cool at less cost in the summer.

Install window coverings to keep heat from coming in through your windows. This also helps prevent heat loss in the winter. Use blinds, awnings, or draperies to help shade your home and keep it cooler in the summer months.

Nest_ThermostatSet your thermostat higher, if you can. Shoot for 78 degrees when you are at home and raise it higher when you are going to be away from your house for long periods of time. You will save about an additional 3% for each degree you add to the thermostat in the summer months.

Turn off electronics. Electronics not only cost to keep running, they create additional heat in your house. Be sure to turn off your computers, TVs and DVD players when they are not in use. To make this process a simple one, connect several devices to one power strip.

Cook outside so you aren’t adding extra heat to your house. Microwaves, ovens, even dishwashers create extra heat. Fire up your grill to avoid this, and run your dishwasher at night to reduce the heat and humidity this device gives off.

Put Up a clothes line. Washing clothes in cold water and letting them air dry can shave a whopping 9% on your energy bill. Your washing machine uses half the energy washing clothes in cold water and your clothes get just as clean.

Change your light bulbs. If you’re still using regular, incandescent light bulbs, it’s time to make a switch. Both compact florecent and led lights have made their way into the mainstream. They are more energy efficient and give off less heat than incandescent light bulbs. Lastly, don’t forget to switch off the light when you leave a room. This move alone will mean a savings of 2% on your energy bill.
